Our story
organisational structure
Organisational Structure and Team Skills
As a new community organisation, we are small but driven by passionate individuals with direct connections to refugee and asylum-seeker communities in Greater Manchester. Our team includes founding members, volunteers, and trustees who bring lived experience as refugees, as well as skills in community organising, advocacy, language support, and mental health awareness.
Our structure is community-led and collaborative:
· Board of Trustees: Provides strategic oversight, bringing expertise in non-profit governance, community development, and personal migration experiences.
· Volunteer Coordinator: Manages volunteer recruitment, training, and coordination to ensure activities run smoothly.
· Outreach & Support Volunteers: Many of our volunteers are refugees or asylum seekers themselves, which helps foster trust and enables culturally sensitive, peer-led support.
· Project Leads: Individuals with specific skills (e.g., ESOL tutoring, mental health support) who guide the design and delivery of core activities like language classes, well-being sessions, and cultural events.
Although we are still growing, we are committed to building capacity through ongoing volunteer development and working closely with external partners to complement our internal skills.
Founded by and for the community, GMEA has grown into a trusted support system and cultural hub. From organizing grassroots events to helping individuals navigate life in a new country, we are building bridges and changing lives.
