The Greater Manchester Ethiopian Community Association (GMECA) proudly hosted a vibrant and heartfelt Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) celebration, bringing together more than 100 people for a day filled with culture, unity, and gratitude.
The event showcased the strength and diversity of the Ethiopian community in Greater Manchester, featuring traditional food, uplifting music, children’s activities, and live entertainment. The celebration honoured both the past and the future — paying tribute to the founders and long-standing community members whose dedication laid the foundations for GMECA’s growth.
Special recognition was given to respected elders and early contributors, including Negat and others whose commitment continues to inspire the next generation.
The celebration was attended by high-level representatives and partners, demonstrating strong support for GMECA’s mission:
MP Afzal Khan
Professor Erinma Bell MBE
Local councillors
Afrocat
Manchester City Council
Mahtsen
Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Manchester, represented by Kesis Solomon
The programme also highlighted future-focused initiatives, including Ethronic, led by Dr. Firew, which aims to empower young people through innovation, digital skills, and cultural identity.
Many organisations and faith leaders who were unable to attend sent messages of solidarity, respect, and ongoing partnership — a testament to the trust GMECA continues to build across Greater Manchester.
Survey feedback from attendees reflected overwhelming appreciation:
“You are doing amazing work for the Ethiopian community — keep creating safe events free from conflict.”
“Well done. Seeing all generations together was beautiful.”
“Thank you so much — this meant a lot to us.”
The Genna Celebration was more than a festive gathering; it was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through unity, collaboration, and shared vision.
GMECA extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, supported, and contributed to the success of this memorable day.
